The EFILE program will be open for transmissions on February 15, 2016, until January 20, 2017, for the electronic filing of your clients' 2012, 2013, 2014 and 2015 personal income tax and benefit return.

What is EFILE?

EFILE is an automated service that allows tax preparation service providers to electronically file their clients' current and first three prior years' income tax and benefit return to the Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) directly from their tax preparation software.

Many new enhancements are implemented to improve EFILE Online services. To keep up to date on the latest news and important dates, visit What's New.

Who can use EFILE?

Any firm, organization, or individual providing tax preparation services who has completed the suitability screening process and has successfully met the criteria will have access to full EFILE Online services and be allowed to electronically file T1 General income tax and benefit returns and/or T2 corporation income tax returns.

Tax preparers who prepare more than 10 returns must file them electronically. Mandatory electronic filing applies to the filing of both T1 and T2 tax returns for the 2012 and subsequent tax years. For more information on mandatory electronic filing, go to Mandatory electronic filing for tax preparers.

Authorized discounters can obtain selected information about a client's account data from the Client Data Enquiry (CDE) service. This service provides a detailed summary of a client's account to an authorized representative available through the new Auto-fill my return service formerly called Tax Data Delivery (TDD) also available to request and deliver tax information. These services can be found in selected EFILE-certified software to assist with the preparation of your client's return.

EFILE web service allows you to transmit your client's returns directly from your tax preparation software. You get an acknowledgement of the individual return instantly. Your software has the capability to simulate the batch filing process by transmitting multiple returns at once, and providing an instant acknowledgement of each return that you have transmitted.

If your business provides tax-discounting services, see Information for discounters.
